In EVOLVE four hunters, each with unique weapons and skills, race to bring down a monstrous behemoth that is constantly growing more deadly as the match progresses. Think of the game sort of like the movie Predator, but with the Predator constantly munching on steroids to get even more predator-y. Both Scott and I played EVOLVE at this year’s PAX and had very different experiences.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a bold take on a classic genre that hopefully brings new players into the fold. With a ton of depth and customization, players could easily find themselves spending hours upon hours tweaking their squads armor, colors, heads, and haircuts before sending their tiny soldiers out to face their inevitable brutal slaughter (unless you reload). Long ago, in an age lost to time, I was an avid MMO player, and even ran my own guild for longer than I care to admit. On top of giving me a very flat bottom from all the sitting that transpired, guild leadership taught me to be infinitely patient when dealing with folks in multiplayer games.
Seeing footage of XCOM: Enemy Unknown at this year’s PAX: East quickly reminded me how much I longed for the glory days of well executed turn based strategy. Not only did the XCOM look incredible, it also seemed to mysteriously capture the tone and pedigree of the original title.
